Alright, let’s lay out a few bits of information here:

  1. Marvel has been releasing a series of teasers all teasing an upcoming book (ongoing or mini)
  2. The teasers consist of characters made up with words, some of which feature highlighted and color coded letters
  3. The letters, when put together with respective colors and descrambled, spell the following phrases: “The universe will break”, “Shut the engines down”, “Everyone you love dies”, “Fight to save everything”(Thanks to user maskedmanissue1 for submitting those to us!)
  4. Three out of the four characters silhouetted are in some way related to the team the Defenders, with Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange being former members and Red She-Hulk being the former paramour of a former member
  5. Marvel is putting out a Fear Itself tie-in entitled The Deep, starring a form of the Defenders and even originally being titled Fear Itself: The Defenders (as confirmed by Cullen Bunn in an interview with us)
  6. This week, Marvel released a “From The Vault” single issue of a classic Defenders story by Kurt Busiek
  7. At Marvel’s Fear Itself panel at Comic-Con, it is safe to assume that Marvel will be announcing this post-Fear Itself title – and the panel will feature Greg Pak, Nick Spencer, editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, and current Fear Itself: The Deep writer Cullen Bunn (as confirmed by CBR)
  8. Every single one of the teasers has the word Defender in it.
Iron Fist. Doctor Strange. Red She-Hulk. Silver Surfer. It certainly stands to reason that a Defenders book is on the way in some form or fashion, no? And perhaps Cullen Bunn is writing it? If we’re lucky, anyway.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
