Marvel Comics and Riot Games are bringing the first “League of Legends” graphic novel, “Ashe: Warmother,” to stores in May 2019. Riot Games’ Senior Narrative Designer/Writer Odin Austin Shafer will craft the story with art from Nina Vakueva (“Heavy Vinyl,” “Hi-Fi Fight Club”). Beginning December 19th, an installment of the series will be released digitally once a month, culminating in the physical graphic novel in May 2019.

“Ashe: Warmother” chronicles the ongoing trevails of Ashe — a character described on the League of Legends website as a “master archer” armed with her queen Avarosa’s bow — as she begins to learn more about the Freljord tribe she has set out to reunite and eventually “[forge] into a mighty nation.”

In a press release, Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski endorsed the concept, observing that “many fans of the Marvel Universe and comics share their interests and passion for storytelling with the gaming community,” and recognizing League of Legends as “one of the most well-known games in the industry, [with] a unique world and extensive roster of rich characters [that] are a perfect fit for comics.”

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video game from publisher/developer Riot Games for the Mac and PC platforms. The game was released in 2009 and by 2012 it was the most played PC game in North America and Europe. The game’s popularity and competitive elements coalesced into the Riot Games-organized “League Championship Series” that has contributed to the game’s proliferation across YouTube and Twitch.
