Marvel Really Wants You Amped Up About Their Heroes Punching Each Other

After last week’s batch of Avengers Vs X-Men promos featuring heroes about to fight heroes (none of which we ran, by the way — we figured you’d “get it“), Marvel has released the cover to Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 (or Round One, depending on how you want to look at things). The cover, illustrated by Jim Cheung, is infinitely reminiscent of videogame promos and covers you’ve seen for two-player punch-ups, such as — but certainly not limited to! — Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, and features all your favorite Marvel heroes posing off against one another with their mouths open, as if to say, “YAAUGGHHRRRRRHHRRRRRRR!!!!!”

Of course, a closer study of the image will reveal a few interesting inconsistencies. Specifically, that Beast and Wolverine, both seen fighting on the side of the X-Men in the original teasers, are now on the side of the Avengers. It just goes to show you: no matter how important an event is to your entire species, or even the entire planet, grudges against that bastard Cyclops matter more.
Oh, and Angel‘s costume seems to be inconsistent as well. But you know what? Let’s just play that one by ear. I’m sure someone just didn’t get the memo.
We’re looking forward to Avengers Vs X-Men. Why wouldn’t we be? All of Marvel’s Architects together on one book that doesn’t even pretend it is anything more than a giant brawl between characters. This has popcorn blockbuster written all over it, and while some might like to spout off blatant apathy or throw around terms like “event fatigue”, we’re stoked. Although, our one caveat is this: until the first issue of AvX is in our hands, we probably aren’t going to care much more than we already do. Somebody should just punch somebody already!

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
