Death of Wolverine #1

The last time Marvel sent out a PR blast about the covers to  “the Death of Wolverine,” it was because they had invented new terminology for what a special edition #1 cover could be. Today, with the supposed death right around the cover, Marvel has released the final three covers to its weekly series — and while they’re not Weapon Etched, they’re certainly interesting.

Illustrated by Steve McNiven, who is doing the internal art as well, the four-issue series is supposed to follow his final day on Earth as he makes his last stand (according to the press release). The covers, though, seem to imply a good deal of world traveling might be in order for him; the second cover, for example, seems to call back to Wolverine’s day in Madripoor as Patch. While I’ve not read the series, I would imagine that a book like this — one where the main event is supposed to take place in another series by another writer — would largely rely on flashbacks.

Regardless, the covers are very nice, especially if you’re a fan of Steve McNiven’s work and collaboration with inker Jay Leisten and colorist Justin Ponsor. And the last one features a naked Wolverine, so that’s nice as well.

Take a look at the covers:

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
