In April, Peter Parker returns in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #1. Hooray!

Starting in May and annoucned on via the Associated Press on SF Gate (by way of Philadelphia), Marvel will be releasing a new side-story in the form of Point One issues for a story called “Amazing Spider-Man Year One: Learning To Crawl.” Written by Spider-Scribe Dan Slott and illustrated by the immensely talented Ramon Perez (which, to be fair, kind of sells this idea on its own), the series will be re-telling Spider-Man’s origins from the young and dorky days of Peter Parker to the here and now and the hero he’s become.

Why? Because.

Well, OK — because there’s a movie, because he just came back, because there’s a new #1, because they want to catch new audiences with that #1, because they want to catch film audiences who don’t just want to watch the first film, because there’s money in it, because Slott is great at writing Spider-Man, because Ramon Perez is an amazing artist. There are reasons; your mileage may just vary for them. So pick whatever works.

There are also teases that it’ll have impacts on later stories because of course it will. Dan Slott likes to seed things, and for as much as he likes to use all of Spider-Man’s history in his work, he might as well invent his own things from the past that are easier to keep track of, right? Why not. And there’ll be some new villain his age that he apparently inspires, according to Slott in the interview, so there’s that.

The series debuts in May as “Amazing Spider-Man” #1.1 and runs for five issues up to #1.5.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
