Marvel Teases New Captain Marvel Book

After Marvel Boy officially dropped his old moniker and became “the Protector” and Ms. Marvel’s book went the way of the dinosaurs, it had been somewhat assumed that the days of the good ol’ Marvel’s might be a bit gone. Even DC was abandoning their own Captain Marvel, replacing him with Shazam because “that’s what everyone calls him anyway” (except not really).

Yet now, with Captain Marvel making some form of resurgence in the pages of “Secret Avengers” during “AvX” (see: “Secret Avengers” #27, with Captain Marvel, Protector and Ms Marvel in one convenient place), it looks like the days of Captain Marvel aren’t so numbered yet, as Marvel has begun teasing a new Marvel book for July.

Whether it is a mini or an ongoing is unknown at this point, but one might guess that Rick Remender is perhaps involved — or Brian Reed, maybe, as Reed wrote both the last Captain Marvel mini (that tied into “Secret Invasion”) and Ms. Marvel’s last ongoing, in which the Protector got his name (after a short stint in “Dark Avengers.”)

Either way, the answer will be revealed next Saturday at the Talk to the Hat panel during Wondercon, so stay tuned.

Updated! Patrick in our comments and Rich at Bleeding Cool have suggested that this book is likely to be a new era for one Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel, with Kelly Sue DeConnick writing. That seems to make sense to us, especially considering Matt Fraction’s seeming interest in the subject.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
