Not to fall into the habit of just becoming a piece of the marketing machine (hence the rather blunt headline) but today, as they continues to ramp up their 75th anniversary celebrations, Marvel has released a press release highlighting their big upcoming Marvel Masterworks Hardcover Slipcase set — and, well, it’s one of those things that if you’re a hardcore Marvel fan, you might just want.
Featuring 11 hardcover volumes highlighting some of Marvel’s most popular and enduring franchises, the slipcase set is quite a thing of pop beauty. Wrapped in a slipcase designed to resemble Avengers mansion, the set comes with about 11 issues per volume showcasing the early days of Captain America, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men with all the Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Bill Everett and Don Heck that you could want. And some Stan Lee as well, I suppose.
Not only that, but what’s exciting to see is that Marvel is finally re-printing “Not Brand Echh”, their former satire series that featured the aforementioned artists as well as Gene Colan, Roy Thomas and John and Marie Severin. Championed by Forbush Man, “Not Brand Echh” has long been out of print, and it appears to be exclusive (for now) to this box set in its reprint capacity, as the press release makes a note of pointing out.
It’s a $500 box set, though, which means that each book individually runs at about $45 a hardcover or so. If you pick this up, it’s because you’re a massive Marvel fan. But, if you do, please let us know the quality of the “Not Brand Ecch” reprints so we can continue to pester Marvel to give that book a wider release. This is the responsible use of journalism: to attempt to bully a major corporation into giving us a reprint of a nearly 50-year old satire magazine!
