With the release of Thor and Captain America on DVD, we were given two shorts that expanded on the greater Marvel U, explaining how Tony Stark became “the consultant” and showed up at the end of Incredible Hulk as well as proving why Agent Coulson was the best hero. Now, with the Avengers getting ready to head to home video soon, Marvel has revealed the next in their line of shorts: “Item 47?”

What is item 47? The answer to that question is simple: it’s a gun. More specifically, it’s one of the guns the Chitauri used in their invasion attempt. Even more specifically, it’s a gun that one of the Chitauri’s lost in the invasion attempt that was picked up by Claire (played by Lizzy Caplan) and Benny (Jesse Bradford), who decide to rob a bank and move to the Carribean. It’s up to two SHIELD agents (Maximiliano Hernandez, who was in the Avengers, and Titus Welliver) to clean up their mess.

The short will run 12 minutes, the longest of Marvel’s shorts so far, and is Marvel Studioss’ attempt to open their world up beyond just the superheroic, allowing for more grounding and believability to the universe as a whole. If you’re going to SDCC, there will be a screening of the short in its entirety; otherwise, pick up the Avengers on blu-ray in September and watch from the comfort of your couch.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
