Despite their best efforts (whatever that means) to keep reveals exclusive to certain outlets and/or available in one go with a book set for release tomorrow, Marvel’s 2015 line-up with 45 new(-ish) books was revealed early this morning. Featuring titles both familiar and new, all with a shiny new #1 branded on the cover, these books represent Marvel’s relaunch-that’s-not-a-reboot post-“Secret Wars,” where the landscape of Marvel is All-New, All-Different, but Still-Pretty-Familiar.
We’ll have a little bit more commentary in a bit, but let’s get to the chase and showcase what Marvel’s October offerings will be:
So, as we can see much has stayed the same. There are still a lot of mainstays in the line-up (too many Avenger books, a whole bunch of X-Men) and some notably missing ones (the Fantastic 4 are nowhere to be seen), and there are a lot of new creative teams (Tara Butters and Michelle Fazekas on “Captain Marvel) as well as a lot of creators names who are no longer featured (we knew Hickman was taking a break post-“Secret Wars”, but now we’re Remender-less and Gillen-less too). There’s also some missing teasers (like something for Bendis’ new “Iron Man” title), so I’d wager we still might be in for an announcement or two.
Still, it’s certainly a different landscape, if not a new one. I’d guess that for a lot of people this does represent the perfect moment to either go all-in on a few Marvel titles or quit wholesale. The New #1 thing is certainly being played up to extremes here, but that also allows a fine exit point(s) for many; as the comic market continues to grow and evolve and much of our focus goes towards creator-owned books rather than company-owned (who are most impactful in moments like this, when they release a bunch of random teasers), we tend to see a running commentary of general lethargy towards sweeping line-wide changes of this caliber.
That said, I’m positive we’ll see most if not all of these books dominating the sales charts in Octobe, and hey, there was a lot of apathy surrounding the New 52, and that didn’t turn out all bad! Eventually. After a couple years. So who knows what can happen!
