Yesterday, we saw this teaser showing an Avengers logo mixed with an omega symbol. Theories were rampant and it seems the answer is in fact that that is the logo for Jonathan Hickman’s “New Avengers”, as revealed by Marvel’s Next Big Thing livechat.

It seems that Hickman’s “New Avengers” will focus on the Illuminati, a group comprised of Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Black Bolt, Beast and Mr. Fantastic, who have been assembled by Black Panther in response to an event in Wakanda. “Avengers is the day book and New Avengers is night. Avengers is how we want the world to be, New Avengers is how it is. One book is about life, one is about death,” Hickman said about the differences between each title.

Hickman has said that a large part of “New Avengers” will be the inter-character tension. “I don’t think people will be surprised to learn that even as these guys go about their job, some will grow to hate one another. This is not a cheery happy story. This is the ‘Death Avengers.'”

Hickman also spoke some about the new direction of “Avengers”, specifically about the long-discussed extended roster on the team. “One of the first things we all agreed on is that the roster should look more like the world. So far we’ve seen the biggest and most iconic characters, but as we reach issues #7 and #8, we’ll see more new characters and characters we’re reviving or recreating. Eventually there will be 24 characters. 12 will be either female or minority characters.”

You can head over to the Next Big Thing livechat for even more information about “Avengers” and “New Avengers”.

“Avengers” #1 and #2 hits stores in December and “New Avengers” #1 and #2 hits stores in January.
