As originally reported at Bleeding Cool, it looks like Marvel’s upcoming “Thanos: Son of Titan” mini-series by Joe Keatinge and Rich Elson has been cancelled. The following information was sent from Diamond to retailers:

THANOS SON OF TITAN #1 (OF 5) & VAR (AUG120580-1, $2.99, FOC 09/24/12) has been cancelled.

Which was then confirmed by Stephen Wacker on Twitter:

For those interested, plans have indeed changed on Thanos. Nothing too dramatic, we just jumped the gun a bit. @joekeatinge and Rich Elson both have projects coming up in the Spidey office that we’ll be announcing soon. They’re bloody great!

So that’s unfortunate.

This isn’t the first time Marvel has cancelled a book before it saw release, such as with Spencer and Cloonan’s hotly anticipated “Doom” mini as well as a “Destroyers” mini-series written by Fred Van Lente. However, when “Destroyers” was cancelled Van Lente assured fans that Marvel had indeed paid him and artist Kyle Hotz for their work, so one could assume any and all work done for “Son of Titan” has been treated similarly.

We’ll put cancelled in quotes for now, though, because we may just see this project again yet. Perhaps something like it, if not exactly this specific one. Marvel clearly has plans for Thanos and his role onscreen, so a Thanos-centric mini-series would serve well enough in bringing cinematic fans to comics looking for something new. What exactly happened here is certainly a bit of a mystery either way.

Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
