When you look at the might of box office titans like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America (and, you know, the actors that play them), you have characters who have combined to bring in billions of dollars in worldwide gross. What happens when you combine them into one package? Well, this weekend’s release of Marvel’s The Avengers was a fun case study to figure out just that.
What happened was both a great movie and one that set the all-time record for biggest opening weekend at $200.3 million. It didn’t just set the record, it shot it into an entirely different orbit, surpassing last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 by over $30 million.
We and industry analysts expected it to be a big opening, but man, that is a hell of a thing. The question is can The Dark Knight Rises surpass that opening later this summer, but that doesn’t matter right now. It’s The Avengers time to shine, and congrats to all involved.
