After having been one of the rumored finalists for the film for weeks now, it is official: Tom Holland will be the next on-screen Spider-Man.

As announced at Marvel.com, July 28th, 2017 will see Holland’s Spider-Man film open in IMAX and 3-D (do we even need to type this for superhero films anymore? Isn’t this practically de rigueur at this point?). The film will be directed by Jon Watts, a director best known for his upcoming Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon, that made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Both Watts and Holland are relative newcomers in the film industry – Holland played the titular role in Billy Elliot on stage in the UK, was in The Impossible with Ewan McGregor and is about to appear in Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Country with his new Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Chris Hemsworth.

The press release does not reveal whether or not Holland will be appearing in Captain America: Civil War, but it seems like a good bet.

Stay tuned for more news as it becomes available.
