What if Frankenstein writer Mary Shelley really lived through the story? Writers Adam Glass (“Teen Titans”) and Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and artist Hayden Sherman (“Wasted Space”) are answering that question at AfterShock Comics with “Mary Shelley: Monster Hunter.” Set in Geneva during the historic winter of 1816, Mary, her fiancé Percy, her sisters Claire and Fanny and the poet Lord Byron travel to the mysterious Frankenstein Estate where frightening events lead Mary to a gruesome, shocking discovery.
Speaking exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Glass commented on the direction of the new series, stating, “how could a twenty-year old woman write the most famous horror work of all the time? Easy, she actually lived it.” He continued, “Olivia and I did extended research on the mother of modern horror and she was way ahead of her time, a true feminist pioneer.”
Olivia Cuartero-Briggs, who is Glass’s assistant in the world of TV, commented on her first comics writing project that “Growing up, ‘Archie,’ and then the ‘Betty and Veronica’ spinoffs were really the only comics out there for girls. Everything was hulking male superheroes, sometimes featuring scantily-clad female sidekicks. Things have changed a lot in the world of comics, thank goodness, and I’m stoked to be contributing comic content by women for women that reflects a real, female experience.
