The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves has officially signed on to direct and produce The Batman. This comes after news that negotiations between the director and Warner Brothers had broken down.

Reeves put out a statement with Warner Brothers saying, “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Warner Brothers President and Chief Content Officer Toby Emmerich stated that, “We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him to perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”

As of now Reeves will be working off Chris Terrio’s rewrite of the original script by Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck, the film’s star and former director. The Batman currently does not have a release date, only a rumoured shoot date of spring of this year. Reeves is now in post-production on War for the Planet of the Apes, with no other projects slated.
