In a recent conversation with Bleeding Cool, writer Max Bemis announced that he will be taking a break from writing for Marvel Comics after spending some time recovering from an emotional breakdown. Bemis elaborated that he is engaged in “therapeutic living” and just returned to writing comics, saying that he is working on his first original graphic novel with Russian artist Maxim Mel.

During the conversation, Bemis elaborated on his “Moon Knight” run, and the issues he ran into with Marvel editorial. Bemis reportedly used his run on “Moon Knight” as a form of therapy, and that it could be read as a whole encapsulation of his life. A quote from the conversation reads, “…as Bemis puts it, ‘a book written by a mentally ill Jew about a mentally ill Jew’ bordered on too ‘crazy’ for its own good ‘in the opinion of some’.” Bemis was solicited as the writer for “Infinity Wars: Arachknight,” but has since been replaced by Dennis Hopeless.

This news comes two months after Bemis officially retired from music (he was the lead singer/songwriter for the band Say Anything.) You can read that announcement here.

Bemis will conclude his run on “Moon Knight” with “Moon Knight” #200, to be published October 24, 2018. “Infinity Wars: Arachknight” #1 will also be released October 24, 2018.

Hopefully, the break from both music and Marvel will give Bemis some time to continue his recovery towards a healthier life.
