With Fox fast tracking the return of the X-Men and director Matthew Vaughn signed on to direct the upcoming X-Men: First Class, it only made sense that significant casting news would be right around the corner. I mean, the movie is set to launch June 3rd, 2011, almost a year from today.

Thankfully, today they cast the lead in the movie as James McAvoy has been cast as Professor Charles Xavier in this film that will capture the inception of the war between Professor X and Magneto. They also cast it very well, as McAvoy is an exceptional actor (see: Atonement, his stage work) who also is well versed in big budget movies (see: Wanted). He’s likely to be able to handle all aspects of the role, from the presumably physical (I can’t imagine the movie won’t take place pre-paralysis) to the pathos of it as well.

Now we just need to find out who gets cast as Erik Lensherr. Given the quality of this casting, I can’t imagine it won’t be someone high quality.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
