BOOM! Studios will publish “Bags (Or a Story Thereof),” a graphic novel written by Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale, and illustrated by Gavin Fullerton (Space Chickens in Space), in July 2019. In a statement from Paste Magazine’s official announcement, McHale describes “Bags (Or a Story Thereof)” as “an odd, rather experimental story about a man looking for his missing dog,” which came about when he “tried to write a novel in one week and failed.”

Regardless of the story’s origin, the writer said it is “very exciting that my weird little book is being adapted into a full-on graphic novel, and even more exciting that Gavin Fullerton is the one adapting it,” going on to praise the artist’s realization of protagonist John Motts’s quest to recover his lost dog. Fullerton, a storyboard artist, seemed to be equally enamored, describing himself as “a huge fan of Pat’s work, so I was incredibly excited when I was asked to adapt his short story ‘Bags’ into a full-length graphic novel.”

This will be McHale’s first original graphic novel, but BOOM! is no stranger to McHale, having previously adapted Over the Garden Wall into a one shot in 2014, and a series in 2015. A new series, “Over the Garden Wall: Hollow Town,” began in October, and “Over the Garden Wall: Distillatoria,” a new graphic novel is set for release on November 21. Before creating the critically acclaimed Over the Garden Wall miniseries for Cartoon Network, McHale rose to prominence as a writer and creative director for the popular Adventure Time cartoon.

“Bags (Or a Story Thereof)” will arrive on store shelves next July. Look for more of McHale’s work when his script for Pinocchio, co-written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, arrives on Netflix in 2021.
