I try not to work on Sundays as much as I can avoid it. I mean, football is on Sundays, but tonight I had to make an exception when I received an email from one of my personal favorite cartoonists: Kagan McLeod.
It was announcing and sharing a collaborative drawing video starring McLeod, Paul Pope, David B, Sam Hiti and Frederik Peeters, and finds the five of them revisiting a French television program from yesteryear. This program was titled Tac Au Tac (or “Tit for Tat”, in English) something the group said “planted the seed for a whole generation to make their own comics.” Feeling the need to recreate that magic for today’s future cartoonists, these five paired up at TCAF this year, and the results can be seen in the video above.
For me personally, comic art is the thing that always inspired me most in this medium. The written word is a wonderful thing, but the art? That’s what separates it from prose, and the boundless ideas these artists unleash separates it from television and movies – worlds of budget – as well. Being able to see the genius of these five brilliant cartoonists is something we can’t not share.
Check out the press release below, and as more videos are released, we’ll be sharing them.
–FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–
Tit For Tat – Collaborative drawing video with Paul Pope, David B, Sam Hiti, Kagan McLeod and Frederik Peeters
Between 1969 and 1975 the French television broadcast Tac Au Tac (Tit for Tat in english) assembled cartoonists from Europe and the Americas to cooperate in improvised drawing. The 10-15 minute episodes aired in-between programing and planted the seed for a whole generation to make their own comics. While many of the nostalgic videos can be found today on youtube, a contemporary answer to the series was lacking.
This year, during the Toronto Comics and Art Festival (TCAF), five cartoonist came together to revive the idea. A spread of cheese, crackers, wine, ink, and brushes were set before five artists. Five collaborative drawings were done that night and captured upon video at Kagan McLeod’s Toronto studio. One segment has been edited (link below) with more in the works for release in the months leading up to TCAF 2014.
