In an interview with Newsarama while discussing the upcoming Hell on Earth stories for BPRD, series creator Mike Mignola spoke a bit about what we could expect from the eventual return of Hellboy later this year in Hellboy in Hell.

Mentioning that the cover work he’s doing is slowing him down a tad, Mignola explains that when the 12 variants for the “Year of Monsters” Dark Horse covers are done he will be devoting all of his time to the new Hellboy series. Unlike other Hellboy books, Hellboy In Hell will be a monthly ongoing with no definite length to it. However, more like other Hellboy books, the first arc will be a four-issue story, will be released monthly, and then there will be a pause between #4 and #5, possibly three to four months. As Mignola explains,

They’re going to come out when they’re going to come out. I’d like to do at least two or three issues a year, but at the same time, there are a million other things I’ve got my hands in. So my goal at this point is to just put out the best comics I can, and if that means there’s only two issues a year, well, at least they’ll hopefully be two really good issues.

Mignola adds that he will do his best to make sure that stories are completed before seeing any form of release as to avoid delays between cliffhanger moments as opposed to story resolutions.

While there is no known start for when we will see Hellboy in Hell, there are plenty of BPRD books on the horizon, starting this month with the Long Death. In the meantime, cross your fingers that Big Red will be back soon.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
