Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. We’re taking a look at all titles headed our way in the March 2022 solicitations for Mike Mignola’s books. And thanks to the folks at Dark Horse comics for sending these our way!

RADIO SPACEMAN: MISSION TO NUMA 4 #1 (of 2)

Written by Mike Mignola
Illustrated by Greg Hinkle
Colored by Dave Stewart
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale March 2, 2022
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

When a ship crashes and lands on a mysterious planet and some of the surviving crew go missing, the mysterious mechanical hero Radio Spaceman is called to investigate. But the planet hides much more than the missing crew, and Radio Spaceman may be stumbling into more than even he can handle.

Based on Mignola’s viral pencil sketches, Radio Spaceman is a steampunk space adventure full of mystery, monsters, and awesome gadgets. Featuring the amazing art of Greg Hinkle (The Beauty, Black Cloud) and colors by longtime Mignolaverse collaborator Dave Stewart, this new series is perfect for Mignola fans old and new!

Mark Tweedale: Those of you that’ve been paying attention may have seen this one coming, but I’m willing to bet it caught most of you by surprise. If you don’t know who Radio Spaceman is, I recommend picking up Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook and checking out pages 170–176. . . also page 56. If you’re unfamiliar with Greg Hinkle’s work, go check out his Instagram. (Hell, check it out even if you are familiar.) And, of course, check out Polygon’s interview with Mike Mignola announcing the miniseries. It’s a great interview and even goes on to hint at little for the future of the Hellboy Universe as well.

THE SWORD OF HYPERBOREA #3 (of 4)

Variant cover by Jesse Lonergan

Written by Mike Mignola and Rob Williams
Illustrated by Laurence Campbell
Colored by Quinton Winter
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale March 16, 2022
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

An expert diver is faced with the extreme dangers of the supernatural and the real when he’s forced to retrieve a mysterious artifact from a crashed zeppelin in the English Channel. How many second chances is one man allowed to have, even when wielding the sword of Hyperborea?

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola gives us a new tale from the world of Hellboy, cowritten by Rob Williams and featuring the art of Mignolaverse veteran Lawrence Campbell in an all-new series of Hellboy lore!

Mark: “The Sword of Hyperborea” is an unpredictable miniseries. Issue #1 will be at least somewhat familiar territory with Gall Dennar in prehistory. Issue #2 jumps to World War I, which we haven’t really explored in the Hellboy Universe, but at least we the secret society on its cover seems familiar enough. But I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted this pitch for issue #3. So, anyone care to guess what issue #4 will be? I’m thinking maybe the new world after Ragna Rok, with the sword being found by a frog person.

Mark: “Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?”

That’s the opening verse to William Blake’s “The Tyger.” Perhaps the poem has some clues to what we may find in this one. We could also look to Hellboy: The Companion, but it only offers a little, simply telling us that in January 1957, Hellboy investigated mass killings near Jabalpur, India.

What we do know is that this title marks Alison Sampson’s debut in the Hellboy Universe. If you’re not familiar with her work, I recommend checking out “Winnebago Graveyard” and “Sleeping Beauties,” and her Instagram.
