Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. Yet again, it’s that time when we look ahead to the upcoming books from Mike Mignola and admire the covers. This time we’ve got artwork from Mike Mignola, Peter Bergting, and Matt Smith. Thanks, as always, to Dark Horse Comics for sending these our way.

Miniseries

Safely tucked away inside the hollow earth where humanity survived after Ragna Rok, precocious young Lilja receives visions of a new darkness taking root on the surface. Defying her elders, Lilja awakens the timeless oracle—once known as Frankenstein—to investigate the warnings and, perhaps, even explore the new world above.

Frankenstein: New World, from Mike Mignola, Thomas Sniegoski, Christopher Golden, and artist Peter Bergting, explores a new chapter in the world of Hellboy!

Mark Tweedale: In case you missed it, Frankenstein is back for a new miniseries starting this August. This is a big deal for a few reasons: 1, this is set after the events of “B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know” with humankind living in the Hollow Earth; 2, if you look at Mignola’s variant cover, you can see he’s got Gall Dennar’s Hyperborean Sword (so, y’know, make sure you’re up to date with “The Sword of Hyperborea” before beginning this series); 3, this reunites the writing team of Mike Mignola, Thomas Sniegoski, and Christopher Golden, who wrote the very first “B.P.R.D.” story, ‘Hollow Earth,’ all the way back in 2022 (which, I might add, has some of the most iconic Hellboy moments ever); and 4, this Peter Bergting’s proper debut in the Hellboy Universe. Look, Bergting has a long history of working with both Mignola and Golden at this point, but it’s mainly been for “The Outerverse” projects. (Though he did some work on the 2002 Hellboy Sourcebook and Roleplaying Game.) Anyway, Bergting is awesome, and I can’t wait to see what he does with ‘New World.’ In fact, there’s a preview of his interiors over at First Comics News.

YOUNG HELLBOY: ASSAULT ON CASTLE DEATH #2 (of 4)

Full color, 32 pages

Miniseries

As Hellboy struggles in the grip of a mysterious illness, a Brotherhood operative inside the B.P.R.D. brings an assassin within striking distance! But even with a fever, young Hellboy has an ace up his (pajama) sleeve. . . or is that a familiar calling card?

Read the exciting continuation of the second Young Hellboy series, from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and cowriter Tom Sniegoski, with art by Craig Rousseau and colors by Chris O’Halloran.

Mark: Sadly, I couldn’t share Michael Avon Oeming’s variant cover for this issue because the art isn’t ready yet. I have to say, young Hellboy, running around with Mac the dog, with a red crab logo on his shirt that looks suspiciously close to the one from “The Adventures of Tintin: The Crab with the Golden Claws” is wonderful. (Keep those Tintin references coming, Matt and Craig. You guys know how much I love those.) Other than that, it’s nice to see a new story referencing the Lobster. . . Is this evidence that Sniegoski wants to write a Lobster Johnson story? Perhaps a Lobster Johnson and the Sky Devil crossover? I sure hope so.

Right, let’s move on to collections coming in October, kicking off with something that technically shouldn’t be in this column, but it’s awesome and I figure Mignola fans would want to know about it. . .

The Valhalla music festival commemorates a long-ago Viking slaughter, but when strange things start to happen, it seems the massacre may be far from over. When festival-goers begin to disappear, and musicians find themselves playing mysterious and ancient songs as if possessed, the fans have to figure out what’s going on before the festival site’s haunting past comes back for blood.

New York Times bestselling horror writers Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon create a music festival to die for in this illustrated novel with artwork by Peter Bergting!

• New prose horror from two New York Times bestselling writers!

Mark: Yeah, I know, this is not a Mignola book, but everyone involved had been a Mignola collaborator at some point, and it sounds like a great project. I didn’t want this one to fly under your radar.

OK, I’ll go back to Mignola books now. . .

    Mignolaversity: “Giant Robot Hellboy” #3

    By | Jan 3, 2024 | Reviews

Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo’s “Giant Robot Hellboy” wraps up with a bang (or should I say boom?) in this final issue as we finally meet the true titular character. And yet this story leaves a lot of dangling threads. This is clearly the beginning of something much bigger. As usual, this being a review […]
