Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. This month we’ve got a bunch of collections on the way, and a brand new series that opens up a whole new corner of the Hellboy Universe. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics for sending these out way. Check ’em out below. . .

As Lilja and Frankenstein explore the vibrant world around them, they rescue someone who introduces them to the “new race of man.” But unbeknownst to them, evil lurks within the shadows, tracking our heroes while sowing seeds of death and destruction.

Mark Tweedale: I’m still kind of amazed this one is happening. Inspired by a drawing Ben Stenbeck drew of Frankenstein with the Hyperborean Sword for a Kickstarter, we’re getting a story that is truly taking us into unknown territory—a new world! I hope you’re following Peter Bergting on Instagram, because he’s been posting some of his pencils and inks for his covers, and they are a joy to behold.

YOUNG HELLBOY: ASSAULT ON CASTLE DEATH #3 (of 4)

Written by Mike Mignola and Thomas Sniegoski
Illustrated by Craig Rousseau
Colored by Chris O’Halloran
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale September 14, 2022
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

The feverish Hellboy, aka the Scarlet Crab, breaks into the ghoulish “Castle Death” accompanied by his dog Mac and a surprising but familiar face. But the “castle” holds strange and dangerous occult items that do not mix well with Hellboy’s hallucinations—especially when the shadowy Brotherhood’s assassin makes his move!

Mark:Yet again, Matt Smith has managed to squeeze a Tintin reference onto the cover of “Young Hellboy,” though this is perhaps the most overt. I love that this is an aspect of the series carried over from ‘The Hidden Land.’ There is also a variant cover by Craig Rousseau, but unfortunately it’s not ready yet, so instead I’ll share Michael Avon Oeming’s variant for issue #2, which I wasn’t able to show off last month:

I’m also liking the idea that this appears to be a relatively small-scope story with young Hellboy—sorry, I mean the Scarlet Crab—on an adventure with Mac the dog. Didn’t see that coming, but so glad it’s on its way. I’m still nursing the hurt of “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956,” so seeing Mac and Hellboy having fun together is going to do me a world of good.

CASTLE FULL OF BLACKBIRDS #1 (of 4)

Variant cover by Vanesa Del Rey

Written by Mike Mignola and Angela Slatter
Illustrated by Valeria Burzo
Colored by Michelle Madsen
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale September 14, 2022
Full color, 32 pages

When Sara May Blackburn headed for New York after the events of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb, she had one goal in mind: find the mysterious Miss Brooks at the Linton School for Girls, and ask her what she knows about the mysterious powers that have plagued Sara May her whole life. But as is often the case with these things, the answers are not as simple as all that. Sara is in for an education in more than just reading, writing, and ’rithmetic at the Linton School.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola partners with celebrated author Angela Slatter and artist extraordinaire Valeria Burzo for a new adventure from the world of Hellboy!

• Continues the story of a fan-favorite character from The Return of Effie Kolb.

Mark: It was clear at the end of “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb” that we hadn’t seen the last of Sara May Blackburn. Even still, I did not anticipate that she’d get her own series. If you missed the initial announcement earlier this week, you can find the details here. The series is being written by Angela Slatter (also credited as A.G. Slatter), which makes me very happy—if you’re familiar with her books, then you already know she’s an excellent fit for the Hellboy Universe. For me, there’s the added bonus of seeing a local author enter the Hellboy Universe. (You make us Brisbanites proud, Angela.) On art is Italian artist Valeria Burzo, and her work is simply stunning. Check out her work on Instagram, it will not disappoint. Not only is “Castle Full of Blackbirds” a new series, but this is both Slatter and Burzo’s first comic in the Hellboy Universe, so yet again I have no idea what expect.

Lately, I could say this about so much coming out of the Hellboy Universe—“The Sword of Hyperborea,” “The British Paranormal Society,” “Frankenstein: New World,” “Koshchei the Deathless in Hell.” Mignola often says “when characters die in the Hellboy Universe, they just become more interesting.” I suppose you could extend that thought to the “end” of the big Hellboy Universe saga, which happened back in 2019, and somehow is even more interesting three years later.

Full color, 240 pages
$39.99
Hardcover, 8″ x 12″

Join monster hunters extraordinaire and jump into eerie and whimsical Victorian-style tales of monster hunters, vampires, and supernatural sleuths in this collection of stories that is equal parts chilling and charming.

In this three-part collection, Professor Meinhardt and his assistant Mr. Knox pursue the undead and Mr. Higgins tragic history; explore strange supernatural happenings with investigator Ms. Mary Van Sloan; and seek to uncover the truth of the prolific vampire slayer and one-time compatriot of theirs, James Falconspeare.

Collecting Mr. Higgins Comes Home, Our Encounters with Evil, and Falconspeare from Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell’s iconic team-up.

“An incredibly original, vibrant, whimsical and at times, comedic take on a much loved horror staple.” —Mass Movement

Mark: A library edition! Professor Meindhardt and Mr. Knox are getting a library edition! This is wonderful news. Warwick Johnson-Cadwell has already assured me there will be a hefty sketchbook section (very important, as I’m sure you’ll all agree). And though I have seen some readers concerned that this means there won’t be anymore Meindhardt and Knox stories, I see no reason to believe this is the case. I rather prefer to look at it as Mignola and Johnson-Cadwell will need to make another three graphic novels to fill the next library edition. Plus just look at that spectacular cover! (In case you missed it, a whole bunch of Mignola-drawn covers were revealed last week. You really should check it out.)
