Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. We’ve got a long-awaited series kicking off in November, which I am dying to talk about so let’s get to it! As always, thanks to Dark Horse Comics for sending these our way.

Lilja and Frankenstein’s exploration of the surface world takes a dangerous turn—between monstrous people and genuine monsters, not everyone will survive.

Frankenstein: New World, from Mike Mignola, Tom Sniegoski, Christopher Golden, and artist Peter Bergting, explores a new chapter in the world of Hellboy!

Mark Tweedale: If by some chance you missed “Frankenstein: New World” #1 earlier this month, let me assure you it was excellent. Issue #4 will also have a variant cover by “Frankenstein Underground” artist Ben Stenbeck, but Dark Horse isn’t ready to show that one just yet. Looking at Bergting’s gorgeous cover, I’m getting real worried this final issue is going to break my heart.

HELLBOY IN LOVE #2 (of 5)
GOBLIN NIGHT – PART 2 (of 2)

Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden
Illustrated by Matt Smith
Colored by Chris O’Halloran
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 9, 2022
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

Hellboy and Anastasia chase the goblins from punk show to occult auction in pursuit of Anastasia’s stolen artifacts in this fun romp across the English countryside.

Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden with artist Matt Smith bring the next installment of Hellboy and Anastasia’s unlikely romance.

Mark: If “Frankenstein: New World” #4 breaks my heart, then I’m sure “Hellboy in Love” #2 will do its damnedest to mend it. I don’t know how long it’s going to take for me to get used to seeing Anastasia in the comics. I look at this cover and I grin like an absolute idiot. I’m so happy that this book is happening.

CASTLE FULL OF BLACKBIRDS #3 (of 4)

Illustrated by Valeria Burzo

Sara May expands her magical education in bigger but riskier ways as her lessons take a turn for the dangerous. And in the shadows, conspiracies begin to take shape. But what do they mean for the young witch?

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola partners with celebrated author Angela Slatter and artist extraordinaire Valeria Burzo for a new adventure from the world of Hellboy!

Mark: This title is still shrouded in mystery for now. I must say, I’m really digging Wylie Beckert’s covers for this series.

KOSHCHEI IN HELL #1 (of 4)

The world above may be over, and Hellboy gone with it, but Koshchei is still in Hell content with his wine and his books—until an old face arrives and brings Koshchei a critical task. An old and powerful foe is returning, and Koshchei must take up his sword and defend the city from destruction.

Mignola returns to Hell to reunite with one of his favorite collaborators, Ben Stenbeck (Frankenstein Underground, Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels, Baltimore, Koshchei the Deathless).

Mark: As I’m writing this, I have not seen IGN’s announcement for “Koshchei in Hell,” so I’m purely reacting to the above cover and solicitation. “Koshchei in Hell” is a direct sequel to last year’s “Sir Edward Grey: Acheron,” which had Sir Edward becoming aware of the growing threat of Pluto. In case you don’t know, Pluto was the ruler of Hell before the Second Fall of Angels and Satan’s uprising. He’s been imprisoned below Hell in Tartarus for the last hundred million years. But there’s a problem: that demon looming on the cover of “Koshchei in Hell” is Hellboy’s half-sister Gamori. She is destined to follow a river blood till she comes home, to Pandemonium, where she will find Satan’s corpse and go mad. Her anguished cries will be so great that they will shatter the walls and Pandemonium will fall around her.

And that could actually be really bad because Pandemonium was built on the backs of Pluto loyalists. We saw a bunch of them freed in “B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth—Cometh the Hour,” but if Pandemonium still stands, is it possible they’re are still some left? If so, when the city falls, they would be free… So you can see why Sir Edward might want to enlist Koshchei’s help to deal with this threat to the New World.

Long story short, I’m very excited for this miniseries!

EDIT: It’s been pointed out to me that the Denon on the cover is not Gamori, but rather Hellboy’s wife. That makes it even more intriguing.

Mark: This collection wraps up the 1950s era of “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.” When the series returns to the ongoing occult cold war plotline, it will be moving into the 1960s. . .

Mignola and Chris Roberson expand the Hellboy universe with a spooky new tale featuring art by Andrea Mutti with colors by Lee Loughridge, collects the four-issue miniseries in hardcover.

Mark: After the revelation at the end of issue #3, I can’t wait for #4. This has been a strong start for this new series, and I’m looking forward to see where they take it next.
