Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. I skipped November because there was only one book coming out, so we’re getting another “two months in one” edition of the solicitations. This is it, the last Mignola comics for 2023. As always, thanks to Dark Horse for sending these our way.

Mark Tweedale:seen the preview on Polygon, then you’ve seen more than I have. That said, James Dowling will be reviewing this series for Mignolaversity as each issue comes out and he seems pretty excited about what he’s seen so far. I’m sure we’ll have a lot to chat about when I join him to review issue #3.
For now, all I’m going by is the covers. I must say, it is fantastic to see the variants for issues #2 and #3 drawn by Geof Darrow and Art Adams, who originally inspired Mike Mignola to write “Giant Robot Hellboy” in the first place. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see the final version of Art Adams’s variant cover for “Giant Robot Hellboy” #3, but as someone that loves seeing a glimpse of the process, I’m pretty happy to get to see the inks.
HELLBOY WINTER SPECIAL:
THE YULE CAT
with colors by Dave Stewart
Written and illustrated by Matt Smith
Colored by Chris O’Halloran
Lettered by Clem RobinsOn sale December 6, 2023
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
MiniseriesHellboy travels to Reykjavik, where children are disappearing and a giant beast has been spotted. . . could it be the infamous Yule Cat of Icelandic lore?
Fan-favorite Hellboy artist Matt Smith writes and draws this chilling wintery one-shot!
Mark: The last time we got a “Hellboy Winter Special” was back in early 2020, so it was a pleasant surprise to see it come back, albeit in a slightly different form. Instead of a collection of short stories, this year’s Winter Special is a single story. It’s also Matt Smith’s writing debut in the Hellboy Universe, and knowing how much of a passion he has for Scandinavian folk lore and mythology, this feels like such a perfect match.

Hardcover, 7″ x 10″One of the last followers of the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra, the unassuming Miss Truesdale is the recipient of Brotherhood leader Tefnut Trionus’s final vision.
From meek secretary in Victorian London to a mighty gladiator in ancient Hyperborea, Truesdale is thrust into the past to fight ancient evils and change the future forever.
Hellboy creator Mike Mignola teams with artist Jesse Lonergan for an all-new time-bending horror tale from the Mignolaverse.
Collects Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea #1–#4 and bonus material.
Mark: To say that I absolutely love this miniseries would be an understatement. Mike Mignola and Jesse Lonergan are incredible together. Looking at this solicitation, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the page count for this collection… it’s a bit higher than the usual 4-issue collection, so we may be getting a bigger sketchbook section. I sure hope so. Editor Katii O’Brien always gives us excellent sketchbook sections, so when there’s one longer than usual, we’re in for an extra special treat.
Finally, I wanted to draw attention to “Mortal Terror” #1 from Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, Peter Bergting, and Chris O’Halloran. No, this is not a Mike Mignola project, so it’s not technically under the purvue of Mignolaversity, but everyone involved here is a Mignola collaborator, and I genuinely believe Mignola fans will enjoy this book. Oh, and Mike Mignola is doing a variant cover for the first issue. Ah-ha! I found a loop hole!

MiniseriesA vampire-flipped Dracula in which mortality means life. . . and life means death.
Vampires Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, and Mina Murray live in underground London, trying to keep the undead city safe from the rumored mortals above who seek to give them life, only to kill them. But when the authorities refuse to believe mortals, let alone the mysterious Count Dracula, are anything more than myth, they are on their own to keep their city eternally dead.
Mark: And one more, why not? Ben Stenbeck has been working with Mike Mignola since 2008’s “B.P.R.D.: The Ectoplasmic Man.” Now, Stenbeck is doing his own four-issue miniseries, “Our Bones Dust,” with Image Comics and colorist Dave Stewart. It’s only fitting that Mignola has also drawn the variant cover for the first issue.
