Mignolaversity News Update: Neon B.P.R.D., Hellboy the Dinosaur, and More

I’m trying something new. Welcome to the first Mignolaversity News Update. I’ll be running this after every new batch of solicitations, letting you know what new books are coming out as well as any other other Mignolaverse-related news from the past month.

OK, let’s dive into this.

Neon B.P.R.D.

Bleeding Cool has the Mignolaverse solicitations early this month. The issues: “Baltimore: The Cult of the Red King” #5, “Abe Sapien” #26, “Hellboy in Hell” #8, and “B.P.R.D.” #135. There’s also the trade paperback release for “Frankenstein Underground” and… a neon B.P.R.D. sign.

— So, there’s a newly discovered dinosaur, Regaliceratops peterhewsi, nicknamed Hellboy, which is pretty cool. Mike Mignola shares his thoughts on the matter here.

Ron Perlman wants “Hellboy III” to happen, and has taken to Twitter to get #HellboyIII trending. It’d be nice to wrap the franchise up. Let’s hope it happens.

— The solicitation for “B.P.R.D.” was particularly dramatic this month:

The impossible will happen!
The stakes have never been higher going into the final massive story of Hell on Earth as the Black Flame tests the limits of his power.

However, you might want to put that in context with this interview with Mike Mignola and John Arcudi from April. Yes, “B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth” is coming close to its end, but “B.P.R.D.” will continue.

— Have you heard of the Hellboy 100 Project? Dark Horse printed a hundred blank-cover versions of “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1952” #1, then the Hero Initiative commissioned comic book artists to do original drawings on each cover. These books will be auctioned off on ebay over ten weeks. Paperback and hardcover artbooks collecting the covers will be released in September.

— If you aren’t following Tonci Zonjic on tumblr, you should be. He’s been posting some really cool “Lobster Johnson” stuff.

— Max Fiumara also shared the inks of his stunning “Abe Sapien” #26 cover on Twitter.

— Do you like digital comics? Because Dark Horse Digital is now selling the trades of “Hellboy” digitally. All twelve volumes are now available, along with the first two volumes of “B.P.R.D. Plague of Frogs.” The third will be coming on Wednesday. These volumes are full of all the content from the trades including the introductions, epilogues, and sketchbooks.

This link is in Russian, but it contains some interesting news about upcoming items from the B.P.R.D. Artifact Archive. The Troll Witch’s Spoon will be added to the archive, however it will be a very limited run. Only 40–50 will be made. Just like all other artifacts in the archive, it will be in a scale of 1:1, making it the largest artifact yet at 50 centimeters (roughly 20 inches) in length.

— And finally, something from Mignolaversity itself, I updated the Hellboy Universe Reading Order for 2015. If you missed it, check it out.

Mignolaversity: New Omnibus Edition Coming May 2021

    By | Sep 28, 2020 | News

I absolutely love the omnibus editions that Dark Horse Comics does for Mike Mignola’s Hellboy Universe. Not only are they an easy way to read the stories, but they’re packed full of extras, often expanding on the already abundant extras in the individual trade paperback releases. Obviously, it’s always excellent news when a new omnibus […]
