Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. We’re taking a look at all titles headed our way in the November solicitations for Mike Mignola’s books and it’s a lot of stuff! It’s going to be an awesome month. Check it out.

HELLBOY: THE BONES OF GIANTS #1 (of 4)

Miniseries

When a startling discovery is made in Sweden, the B.P.R.D. sends Hellboy and Abe Sapien to investigate. What ensues is a wild adventure full of Norse legends, mythical creatures, and a threat that could bring not just Earth but the Nine Realms of Norse mythology to their knees.

Based on the illustrated novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, this four-part comics adaptation of Hellboy: The Bones of Giants brings readers into Hellboy’s fight against the Frost Giants with stunning art by Matt Smith (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Goloski Station, Barbarian Lord, Folklords) and colors by Chris O’Halloran (Folklords, Black Panther, Ice Cream Man).

Mark Tweedale: If you missed the news, Hellboy: The Bones of Giants, probably the most beloved of all the spinoff prose novels, is being adapted into a comic. Original authors Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden are back, and joining them on art duties is Matt Smith along with his “Folklords” colorist Chris O’Halloran. These two are a hell of a team (if you haven’t already read “Folklords,” go check it out) and I can’t wait to see how they bring this world to life. Judging by the reactions of fans I’ve already spoken to, I’m not the only one. Check out the full announcement over at io9. And earlier today we chatted to Christopher Golden and Matt Smith about the book with an exclusive first look at the interior.

HELLBOY: THE SILVER LANTERN CLUB #2 (of 5)

Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson
Illustrated by Christopher Mitten and Ben Stenbeck
Colored by Michelle Madsen
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 24, 2021
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

What could a missing explorer and a string of strange killings possibly have in common? Silver Lantern Club members Sarah Jewell, Lady Bai, Major Singh, and Sir Edward Grey bring fresh eyes to each other’s cases. . . and find they meet unexpectedly in the middle!

Mark: I mentioned Lady Bai Lian in my review for “The House of Lost Horizons: A Sarah Jewell Mystery” #4 last week. As I suspected, she’s certainly a character we’ll be seeing more of. As for Major Karam Singh, we previously met him in “Witchfinder: The Gates of Heaven.” After hearing about this corner of the Hellboy Universe for so long, I’m glad we’re finally exploring it. Even still, there’s so much there, I get the feeling this miniseries will end up being just the tip of the iceberg.

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1957
FORGOTTEN LIVES

Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson
Illustrated by Stephen Green
Colored by Dave Stewart
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 24, 2021
Full color, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries

Hellboy and Professor Trevor Bruttenholm team up for some quality father-son time at a New York potter’s field where they try to unravel the mystery of a spectral being haunting the packed graveyard. Upon arrival, the two of them quickly realize there may be more things haunting the buried poor at the mass grave than meets the eye. . .

Celebrated writer Mike Mignola and longtime collaborator Chris Roberson bring you another exciting Hellboy one-shot, with exquisite art by Stephen Green and Dave Stewart!

Continued below

Mark: This will be second of five “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957” one-shots. ‘Forgotten Lives’ sees the return of artist Stephen Green, who previously worked on “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1954—Black Sun” and “Lobster Johnson: Garden of Bones.” This is part of the reason I’m excited about these titles, because it brings back so many great artists we’ve had on this title before. It’s been a while since we’ve had Green on the book, but he’s been busy with his own creator-owned title “Sea of Stars” (which you should also check out, by the way), so this one-shot is the perfect way for him to jump back into the Hellboy Universe. Stephen, we’re happy to have you back!

TALES FROM THE OUTERVERSE

Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden
Illustrated by Peter Bergting
Colored by Michelle Madsen
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale January 5, 2022
Full color, 144 pages
$24.99
Hardcover, 7″ x 10″

Mythical hero Cojacaru the Skinner returns from the grave, the legendary Golem awakens, and the powerful Wyrder Imogen pursues her foes in this stunning collection of stories from Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden’s world of witches and warriors.

Collects Cojacaru the Skinner #1–#2; The Golem Walks Among Us! #1–#2; and the Imogen of the Wyrding Way one-shot.

Mark: Peter Bergting really outdid himself with this cover. If you’re familiar with his work outside of comics, then like me, you’ve probably been wanting him to do some Outerverse covers for a while, which is part of why “Tales from the Outerverse” was such a treat for me. I’ve thoroughly explored seeing this world through different characters’ eyes, but I hope this isn’t an isolated event. I would certainly love to see more tales in future. . .

LADY BALTIMORE: THE WITCH QUEENS

Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden
Illustrated by Bridgit Connell
Colored by Michelle Madsen
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale January 12, 2022
Full color, 144 pages
$24.99
Hardcover, 7″ x 10″

The Baltimore legacy is about to get bloody!

Once she was Sofia Valk, living in a village overrun by evil. In time she became Lord Baltimore’s most trusted ally. Now, more than a decade after his death, Europe has erupted with the early battles of World War II and dark forces are rising again. With witches, vampires, and Nazis on the march, Sofia must embrace the title of Lady Baltimore! But can she fight monsters without becoming a monster herself?

Horror genius writing team Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden reunite, with stellar art by Bridgit Connell and colors by Michelle Madsen as they return readers to the world of Baltimore in this deluxe hardcover, complete with a sketchbook section.

Mark: If you’ve been following our reviews, you already know how much I’ve enjoyed this series. Sofia was my favorite character in “Baltimore” and now she’s got her own book. It’s just awesome. Also, I love that cover by Abigail Larson and I hope she sticks around for more.
