Welcome to Mignolaversity, Multiversity Comics’ dedicated column for all things Mike Mignola. The folks over at Dark Horse Comics have been kind enough to send over an advanced look at the solicitations for Mike Mignola’s books coming this September along with some fantastic cover art from Laurence Campell, Peter Bergting, Christopher Mitten, Ben Stenbeck, and Mike Mignola. Enjoy!

THE GOLEM WALKS AMONG US! #2 (of 2)

Miniseries

Brought to a small fishing village to fight a cult, Josef the Golem finds himself face-to-face with one of his oldest enemies from centuries of fighting witches. And when the fight comes to a head, the ultimate question will be whether fighting witches or saving humanity is really at the heart of the Golem’s purpose.

Mark: Spoilers if you’re not up to date with “Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens,” I suppose, but it’s pretty clear that Josef the Golem returns. In my review for “Lady Baltimore” next week, I’ll talk a little bit about the strange relationship between that title and these “Tales of the Outerverse” stories, which sort of stand alone, but also function as sequels, except that they’re coming out at the same time as “Lady Baltimore.” I am really looking forward to seeing more of Josef, and hopefully this is a precursor to a sequel to the events of Joe Golem and the Drowning City—I’ve been thinking about it since I first read the novel in 2012.

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1957
F
AMILY TIES

Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson
Illustrated by Laurence Campbell
Colored by Dave Stewart
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale September 15, 2021
FC, 32 pages
$3.99
One-shot

Before they can track down an errant copy of Gustav Strobl’s Witchcraft and Demonology, Hellboy and B.P.R.D. agent Susan Xiang are sidetracked by a beset housewife’s pleas for help. Unraveling the mystery of an unwanted house guest may lead the occult investigators right to where they wanted to be, but also right into demonic danger.

Celebrated writer Mike Mignola and longtime collaborator Chris Roberson bring you yet another hit Hellboy one-shot, with art by the extraordinary Laurence Campbell and colors by Dave Stewart.

Mark: Remember last month’s solicitations when I said it looked like Roberson and Mignola were laying the groundwork for “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957”? Well, here it is! In case you missed the announcement, you can check it out over at SyFy.com. This is the first of five one shots that will wrap up the 1950s stories. (That’s not to to say the series is ending, but rather that there’s going to be a timejump into the 1960s. . . but that’s a topic for another time.)

I have to say, it’s good to see the 1950s logo again. I’ve missed it. I’ve also missed having Laurence Campbell in the Hellboy Universe—it’s going to be fantastic to see what he does with this story. He’s also doing the covers for each of the “1957” one-shots, and the ones we’ve seen so far look fantastic.

Miniseries

Sarah and Marie-Thérèse LaFleur have identified the murderer, but that turns out to be the least of their concerns! As supernatural forces stretch their influence over the island where Sarah and the others are trapped, one person’s selfishness and folly could be everyone’s undoing.

Jump into the climactic conclusion of this Hellboy-universe occult mystery.

Continued below

Mark: God damn, that cover! This is the last issue of this miniseries, but hopefully not of “The Sarah Jewell Mysteries.” I’ve got my fingers crossed for more (and soon).

HELLBOY UNIVERSE ESSENTIALS: B.P.R.D.

Written by Mike Mignola
Illustrated by Mike Mignola
Colored by Dave Stewart
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 10, 2021
Full color, 136 pages
$14.99
Paperback, 7″ x 10″

Jump on to the B.P.R.D. series and jump in to the horror-fueled adventure with this introductory volume!

Meet Abe Sapien, a senior agent in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. He and his fellow uncanny agents Liz Sherman, Roger the homunculus, and Johann Kraus uncover his occult origins while try to stop a plague of monstrous frog men. As it begins its spread across America, an apocalyptic new direction to Mignola’s stories opens up. Hellboy Universe Essentials: B.P.R.D. is a perfect entry point for curious fantasy, horror, and occult readers looking for a taste of something new

Mark: So it looks like this is going to collect the original “B.P.R.D.: Plague of Frogs” miniseries. As a sample of the “B.P.R.D.” series, it’s definitely a good one, and it stands alone well enough since it’s set before the long-running plotlines have really taken root yet. But the seeds are definitely there.

As a reminder, this is a book for readers that want to dip their toe into this universe, but not jump into the deep end.

B.P.R.D.: HELL ON EARTH – VOLUME 3
—PAPERBACK OMNIBUS EDITION—

Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
Illustrated by Laurence Campbell, Tyler Crook, Peter Sneibjerg, and James Harren
Colored by Dave Stewart
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 24, 2021
Full color, 408 pages
$29.99
Paperback, 7″ x 10″

The B.P.R.D. fight to protect the world from the rise of the monstrous Ogdru Hem, as teams hit a blizzard-torn Russia and the ruins of both Chicago and New York City. Meanwhile, Liz Sherman fights a deranged doctor in Utah, and the young psychic Fenix goes head to head with a monster-worshipping cult.

This omnibus edition collects B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth volumes 7–9 in paperback for the first time, plus an expanded sketchbook section.

B.P.R.D. continues to impress, and prove that although Hellboy might be what draws fans in, it’s the larger Universe that will make them stay.” —Unleash the Fanboy

Mark: I’m constantly getting asked when the “B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth” omnibuses are getting reprinted in paperback. Don’t worry, they’re coming.

SIR EDWARD GREY
WITCHFINDER – VOLUME 2
—OMNIBUS EDITION—

Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson
Illustrated by Ben Stenbeck, D’Israeli, and Christopher Mitten
Colored by Dave Stewart and Michelle Madsen
Lettered by Clem Robins

On sale November 17, 2021
Full color, 424 pages
$39.99
Hardcover, 7″ x 10″

Collect the occult adventures of Sir Edward Grey, otherwise known as Her Majesty’s Witchfinder!

Discover a nest of vampires, brave a technological “gate” to another realm, and track down the truth behind Jack the Ripper in this collection of three intense adventures of Sir Edward Grey. As the Queen’s personal “Witchfinder,” Grey continues to pursue the occult goings on in London and beyond. But this time the events he encounters—and the things he learns—will lead him to question his very future.

Complete your Witchfinder omnibus library with this second volume, featuring the writing of Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson, with art from Ben Stenbeck, D’Israeli, and Christopher Mitten and stunning colors from Michelle Madsen and Dave Stewart.

Collects Witchfinder TPB volumes 4–6.

Mark: Usually the Hellboy Universe omnibuses have the same cover artist for a series, but in this case Mike Mignola did one cover and Ben Stenbeck did the other. That said, they really do feel like a set, with both artists using a similar structure and ink wash look. This is, sadly, the end of “Witchfinder,” but Chris Roberson has teased another series with Sir Edward Grey in the future; something in the vein of William Hope Hodgson’s Carnacki stories.

    Mignolaversity: “Giant Robot Hellboy” #3

    By | Jan 3, 2024 | Reviews

Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo’s “Giant Robot Hellboy” wraps up with a bang (or should I say boom?) in this final issue as we finally meet the true titular character. And yet this story leaves a lot of dangling threads. This is clearly the beginning of something much bigger. As usual, this being a review […]
