'Static: Shadows of Dakota' #1

During a New York Comic Con panel yesterday, DC publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee revealed some of the titles that will celebrate Milestone Media’s 30th anniversary in 2023. These consist of a special, the five-issue series “Icon vs. Hardware,” and a new Static miniseries, “Static: Shadows of Dakota,” all debuting during Black History Month in February.

“Static: Shadows of Dakota” is the six-issue sequel to 2021-2022’s “Static: Season One,” and will be written again by Vita Ayala. Nikolas Draper-Ivey, who provided art for the first volume with ChrisCross, will return, and take on co-writing duties as well this time. No plot details were given, but issue #1 will be released on February 7.

“Icon vs. Hardware,” written by Reggie Hudlin and Leon Chills, will see the two heroes come to blows after Hardware discovers a time machine, and begins using it to alter the history of the world. The five-issue battle will commence on February 14. No artists were given at the time of release. Hudlin and Chills previously co-wrote “Icon & Rocket: Season One,” and the “Milestones in History” segment that set up the series.

The “Milestone 30th Anniversary Special” will feature stories by Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan, Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Chuck Brown (“Bitter Root,” “Black Manta”), Stephanie Williams (“Nubia: Queen of the Amazons”), Yasmin Flores Montanez (“Goosebumps: Secrets of the Swamp”), and more. Cowan and Draper-Ivey will also respectively provide the main cover art and a variant: the former homages 1961’s “The Flash” #123 (the first meeting of Barry Allen and Jay Garrick), while the latter showcases the story Draper-Ivey is writing and drawing, which will team up Static and Batman Beyond (ala Justice League Unlimited.)

These titles join the previously announced original graphic novel “Static: Up All Night.” In more DC news, Lee revealed former Marvel editor-in-chief and CCO Joe Quesada — who left the company earlier this year — will be providing cover art for the Distinguished Competition, including variants for January and February’s “Batman” #131 and #132.
