According to the Washington Post, Milestone Media, the comics company co-founded by the late Dwayne McDuffie, will return this year. Spearheaded by Reggie Hundlin, Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle, Milestone is set to both revive old characters and introduce new ones. For those unaware, Milestone was founded to feature characters of color, as well as creators of color, in 1993.
The project, being described as ‘Milestone 2.0,’ is focusing on more than just the comic medium, specifically noting that the name of the company, Milestone Media, allows them to have irons in many fires that a traditional comic book company may not be able to access.
A previously announced “Static Shock” series has been announced as being in development at Warner Bros, and it has not been made clear what level of involvement Milestone will have with the series. Also unknown is what DC Comics role is in this endeavor – Milestone books had been published by DC through a licensing agreement since their inception, and certain characters – most specifically Static – have crossed over and been part of DC’s main universe in the wake of the New 52. The article hints that they will be working with “different publishers,” so perhaps DC will still have some role.
We will have more details as they emerge, but this can only be seen as good news for fans of quality comics, especially those that give opportunity to tell diverse stories that aren’t typically seen in mainstream comics.
