How about this for a random Thursday announcement? Just announced on Entertainment Weekly (but hinted at many times before, and we knew of the partnership), “Chrononauts” from Mark Millar, Sean Murphy, Matt Hollingsworth and Chris Eliopulous will be launching in March for its first four issue run at Image Comics. Telling the tale of two pioneers of time travel as they make the bold leap to the past to plant an American flag in the soil of where Columbus arrives the day before he does (and what naturally goes wrong when they do), this series is supposed to be much more comedic than other Millarworld books and certainly things Murphy has done in the past.
And it sounds like a whole lot of fun, and Millar and Murphy are clearly energized by the concept. While the concept is based on a rather ridiculous premise – the first thing we do is planting an American flag where Columbus landed…really? – it has a lot of potential for a lot of fun and for some really amazing stuff from Murphy, one of the best artists in comics. When he’s paired with Hollingsworth, magical things happen, and I’m excited to see what they come up with. And good lord, that preview art is Murphy at his absolute finest.
The plan is for a four-issue run to start and then two more series to follow later on (likely as it can fit into Murphy’s schedule, who is also working on “Tokyo Ghost” at Image with Rick Remender), which sounds like a pretty great way to handle it, especially with Millar’s new promise to only release titles when they’re finished. Of course, you could always wait for the movie (which is definitely coming), but I have a feeling this comic will be a great one. Check out some of the preview art below (and above), and get hyped.
