There are times when series are announced that you (or I) just can’t wait to buy it or pre-order it. This is one of those times.

Marvel announced today that Peter Milligan will be writing a 5 issue series spread out over a single month called 5 Ronin. The book stars Punisher, Wolverine, Deadpool, the Hulk, and Psylocke as wayward lone samurai seeking revenge over individual storylines. The book will be bound together thematically, but will ultimately feature five stand alone stories of redemption featuring redone versions of these Marvel characters as the “ultimate super hero samurai epic.” That sentence alone excites me beyond belief.

For the art department, the book will feature Tomm Coker, Dalibor Talajic, Laurence Campbell, Goran Parlov and Lenadro Fernandez. On top of that, each issue will feature a cover by David Aja (!!!) and variant covers by John Cassaday, Mark Brooks, Giuseppe Camuncoli, David Mack, and Ed McGuiness.

This book already sounds pretty intensely awesome. The concept of these superheroes (or anti-heroes, with Punisher and Deadpool) stripped of the “super” part and put into Feudal Japan is a really exciting one, and I hope that Milligan can pay it off. You can also probably assume that if this does well, there will eventually be a sequel featuring more characters in this nature. Either way, the book is slated to come out during the month of March for $2.99 each – Bam! Count me in.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
