Marvel Comics have announced Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham’s long-delayed series, “Miracleman: The Silver Age,” will commence at the company this October. A follow-up to 1990’s “Miracleman: The Golden Age,” the series tells the story of Young Miracleman/Richard Dauntless, the sidekick of the original from 1963, as he reawakens in the 21st century, and discovers his mentor now rules over a utopian society. “His best friends have become gods and monsters,” says the synopsis. “Where can a hero from a simpler time call home in this brave new world?”

“We’re back! And after thirty years away it is both thrilling and terrifying,” Buckingham says. “Neil and I have had these stories in our heads since 1989 so it is amazing to finally be on the verge of sharing them with our readers. I have pushed myself to my limit to craft something special for these issues. Cinematic in approach, clean and elegant, drawing on the best of my own style but also paying homage to the exceptional talents of all who came before us, whose unique visions have shaped this ground-breaking series over forty years, and the 1950s ‘Marvelman’ foundations on which it was built.”

Gaiman and Buckingham originally intended “The Silver Age” as the second of three six-issue arcs, which would be concluded with “The Dark Age.” The first two issues of “The Silver Age” were published by Eclipse Comics in 1994, but the company’s bankruptcy meant the rest of the series (including a third, completed issue) went unreleased. Marvel reprinted “The Golden Age” in 2015, and a reprint of “The Silver Age” #1-3 was set to follow in 2017, but it was apparently delayed so the series could be completed. The remastered editions of the previously released issues will feature new artwork, and other bonus material.

“Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age” #1 will be released in October. It will be preceded by “Miracleman” #0, a one-shot marking the 40th anniversary of Alan Moore’s run, featuring a prelude by the creative team, as well as new stories by Jason Aaron, Mike Carey, Ty Templeton, Ryan Stegman, and more.
