Via IGN, Dark Horse Comics have announced “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” a four-issue prequel to the upcoming Netflix series of the same name. It will be written by the show’s executive producers Kevin Smith and Rob David, along with series writer Tim Sheridan, and illustrated by Mindy Lee (“Crimson Lotus”).
Like the forthcoming miniseries, “Revelation” will be a canonical continuation of the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon, which ran from 1983 to 1985. According to the synopsis, the comic will take place after Prince Adam/He-Man rescues his father, King Randor, from a monster called the Orlax, whom he discovers has a mysterious connection to his Sword of Power. The comic will also see Teela, the Captain of the Royal Guard, taking “the reins of a powerful legacy” (possibly that of her mother, the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull.)
“When the ‘Masters of the Universe’ franchise first launched nearly 40 years ago, each action figure came with a comic book to enable children to further explore the world of Eternia,” said David in a statement. “Now, in partnership with Dark Horse, we will go back to our roots to set-up the upcoming ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’ television series with a world-shattering comic book tale.” Dark Horse is taking up the license from DC, who published several “He-Man” series from 2012 to 2020, including crossovers with the DC Universe, Injustice, and ThunderCats.
“Masters of the Universe: Revelation” #1 will be published on July 7, with a main cover by Stjepan Šejić, and variant covers by Mike Mignola, Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson, Laura Martin, and more. The animated Masters of the Universe: Revelation will be released on Netflix sometime this year, along with the CG-animated reboot aimed at kids, simply named Masters of the Universe.
