MS Masterpaint Theater: Lick A Vision

There are three for sure things all people love in life: comic covers, cover bands, and MS Paint. Some warned me to never combine this holy trinity. We here at Multiveristy Comics said no, threw caution to the wind, and combined mankind’s three favorite things for our new weekly feature; MS Masterpaint Theater! Each week, we will highlight some of the best comic cover art by recreating those masterpieces in the artist’s ultimate tool, MS Paint.

To achieve a consistent level of greatness we will follow some simple rules for these masterpieces. Lets lay those out now.

Rules:

  1. Must use MS Paint.
  2. Must use mouse and keyboard.
  3. No tips, tricks, or hints.
  4. 1 hour per piece.
  5. Each piece will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

Pretty straightforward. Obviously, MS Paint would have to be used; I questioned putting it as a rule, but you can’t trust anyone now a days. We are only going to allow the classic keyboard mouse combo for these tributes. None of those fancy stylus allowed here. I have no idea if there are tips for MS Paint – aside from don’t use it – but I am sure Buzzfeed has complied something. That said, we won’t search for them. If we learn something in MS Paint, well then we have truly learned something about ourselves. Lastly, only 1 hour per piece. This serves multiply purposes: I don’t really want to be spending forever on something that will undoubtedly look like garbage, and it will probably lead to “funnier” pieces. Each MS Paint piece will be rated 1 out 10 for how well it recreated the original. If we ever break the 3’s, I’ll be pretty ecstatic. Now that those ever so important rules are out of the way,  welcome to MS Masterpaint Theater!

*As a quick not for this first one we have included covers from the week of 5/11 and 5/4 for comics. Enjoy, maybe.

The Vision #7

By Mike Del Mundo

First up is the cover for Vision #7 by Mike Del Mundo. Mike is honestly one of my favorite cover artist in comics. He always manages to tell a very subtle story with his cover images. This cover with the different versions of Wanda tearing at his heart in a sea of red capes, perfection. Really great composition with very stark coloring. Should be too hard to recreate.

Whats up ladies? Its as if this Vision was created by Ultron using turds and toaster parts. I’m pretty sure Wanda top left is licking Vision’s face; maybe that’s why he looks so grumpy and stumpy. Fabric is one of the hardest things to illustrate, but I am prettttttyyy sure I nailed it here. I am not sure whats going on in the chest region. Mike has beautiful illustrated Wandas phasing at his heart – I chose to illustrate stubs and white goop and maybe he is body is in there. I can not tell you for sure.

Punisher #1

By Declan Shalvey

Now lets take a look at Declan Shalvey’s cover for Punisher #1 out this past week from Marvel. Shalvey always is able to create strong covers with very stripped down images and effective use of dead space. His covers for Injection for Image are all amazing and this Punisher image is outstanding. So now that we have seen Shalvey’s original and beautiful cover, lets see how I ruined it in MS Paint.

Oh boy that’s some mean muggin. Somehow I managed to give it a pretty good underbite and maybe a skull that’s put on a few more pounds than Shelvey’s. Where Shelvey’s red overlay is sharp and clean I was able to pull off a more smeared mess look. I will say if you squint really good from far away, eh.

Revival # 39

By Jenny Frison.

Revival_39-1

Alright one of the best cover artist in comics hands down. Revival has consistently the best covers in comics. Jenny’s range in styles and layouts is unmatched. Take this cover for 39. Jenny is able to work in the style of the classic Japanese art and wood block prints. She is always able to evoke a surprising amount of emotion from the series in the covers alone. Should be easy to recreate for sure.

Hot garbage. My woman seems to have stepped into some sort of quicksand and sunk a bit. Proportions really took a hit here as well as her face, sword, and just about everything else. Tried really hard to get that faded look and I got some of it. Most of the leaves seemed to have blown away. Its a lot bluer than Jenny’s so maybe mines a winter piece and the leaves are gone. I couldn’t even get the black circle right.

Solid 1 leaf out of 10.

Thank you for checking out the first installment of MS Masterpaint Theater. Look for two more stunning recreations next week. Hopefully as the feature goes on, other Multiversity Staff will be tricked into contributing and possible creator guests. If you are a reader and would like to contribute we would love your submissions for your MS Paint masterpieces. Until next week may your airbrush always be crappy.
