Marvel Studios have released the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was previously attached to the end credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home:
The trailer opens with audio of Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong) after the events of No Way Home, warning Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange that there will be consequences for tampering with the fabric of reality in that film. Strange himself is seen wandering into a snowy Manhattan, where the mirror dimension appears to be intruding into our universe.
After an ominous montage that briefly shows Stephen attending Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams)’s wedding, the good doctor is seen visiting Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, now working at an orchard after the events of WandaVision. Strange tells Wanda he’s not here to discuss what happened at Westview, but to ask for her help.
The next montage shows Stephen, a variant of Christine, and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) entering a surreal ruin in the multiverse, as well as the return of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Strange’s resentful former ally Karl Amadeus Mordo, who warns Strange he is the greatest threat to our world. Kamar-Taj and Wong are shown under attack, while Strange protects America from a Shuma-Gorath-esque monster (referred to as Gargantos on the film’s LEGO sets) in the streets of New York.
It all concludes with Stephen in a dark version of the Sanctum Sanctorum, where it’s revealed Mordo meant what he said quite literally: Strange comes face-to-face with a pale, haggard version of himself, similar to the variant from the animated Disney+ series What If…?, who snarls, “Things just got out of hand.”
Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases May 6, 2022, roughly five-and-a-half years after the first film by director Scott Derrickson. You can also check out the teaser poster, featuring both versions of Strange and Wanda, below:
