“Nimona” and “Lumberjanes” creator N.D. Stevenson has closed out Pride Month with a new comic strip announcing his new name is Nate, and that going forward, he will be exclusively using the pronouns “he/him/his.” However, Stevenson — who has previously described himself as transmasculine and bigender — clarifies he has not come out as a transgender man, but remains a non-binary person, who will keep his middle name Diana; as he explains, “this is how I want to interact with a world that demands we choose one of two.”

While Stevenson is far from the first comics creator to come out as trans or non-binary (“Lumberjanes” co-creator Gus Allen also came out as a trans man after the series became a hit), he is arguably the most prominent to change his name: “Nimona,” “Lumberjanes,” his memoir “The Fire Never Goes Out,” and the animated reboot he oversaw, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, were all released under his birth name. (It is unknown at the time of writing if Netflix or DreamWorks will amend Stevenson’s credit on She-Ra as a result.) Stevenson came out as non-binary shortly after She-Ra‘s finale in 2020, beginning medical transition soon after, and started using his new name privately last year. He will continue to use the initials N.D. professionally to maintain a connection to his past work.

Currently, Stevenson is developing an animated version of “Lumberjanes” for HBO Max, while an animated film based on “Nimona,” produced by Annapurna Pictures, is set for release on Netflix next year. He concludes his message to fans stating, “I think I wanted to wait until I was absolutely sure of everything, which I still am not if I’m being honest. There’s never been some magic compass inside telling me which way to go, just little things that add up over time. All the same, what a wonderful thing, to choose a name that feels right. Thank you for coming along with me on this journey.”
