New Game Of Thrones Season 3 Production Video Shows Off New Characters [Potential Spoilers]

In my world, “spoilers” is an all-encompassing thing. Most people consider a spoiler simply “knowing how a film ends” or whatever, but I don’t even watch trailers for movies that aren’t adaptations of novels I’ve read. So while I’ll watch the Game of Thrones season 3 production video, I will on occasion turn my head away from the screen during a trailer at the cinema.

So, that said, I don’t know what your thresholds are. Do you not want to see the new characters coming, and do you want to be surprised as to who they are? Do you consider that a spoiler. Well, then turn away. If not, read on. I’ll do my best to keep book-related comments to a minimum.

I’m serious, though. Some of this stuff is spoiler-worthy, in my book, so keep that in mind.

Last night with the finale of Boardwalk Empire, HBO aired a production video giving a look at the third season of Game of Thrones, which is based on the first half of A Storm of Swords. Suffice it to say, it’s going to be a BIG season, with a lot of things happening and a lot of new characters showing up. While it didn’t show all of them (a few notable characters missing, although I’m personally not surprised who didn’t appear), we got our first look at 8 of the new characters who will be joining the cast. Take a look at some screenshots (pulled off of reddit) below.

To make your enjoyment easier, I’ve provided names and light teases/trivia as to who they are for non-book readers.

Edmure Tully

Brother to Catelyn Stark. Not as cool as the Blackfish, who will also be appearing this season.

Beric Dondarrion

Briefly portrayed by David Michael Scott in season one. Re-cast for extra bad-assery, I assume.

Lady Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thornes

Margaery’s grandmother, who arrives for the pending nuptials. Played by the fantastic Diana Rigg!

Tormund Giantsbane

Tall-talker, Horn-blower and Breaker of Ice, Husband to Bears, the Mead-king of Ruddy Hall, Speaker to Gods and Father of Hosts. Breakout character of season 3, I predict.

Jojen and Meera Reed

Two characters who were supposed to appear in Season Two but didn’t, for some odd reason. Crannogmen, the both of ’em.

Mance Rayder

A former member of the Night’s Watch and the current King Beyond the Wall. Will most likely be a popular character.

Locke

A “new” character, Locke is an amalgamation of the Bloody Mummers, primarily Vargo Hoat. Why they didn’t just use Vargo Hoat is beyond me, so I will forever call him “Not Vargo.”

For the production video, see below:

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
