Image Comics have announced the post-colonial afrofuturist adventure comic “New Masters,” a miniseries by writer Shobo Coker (“Buckhead“), and his brother, artist Shofela Coker.

The comic is set in Nigeria after aliens have occupied the region, bringing new technology and new frontiers for the people of West Africa to reckon with. It follows a girl from Lagos who, alongside her group of outcasts, discovers an alien artifact that grants them immense power, but also brings them into conflict with equally formidable foes.

“‘New Masters’ is the culmination of nearly a decade of work Shof and I have put into creating an authentic and thrilling future vision of Africa,” said Shobo Coker. “I’m delighted to share the adventures of our crew of outcasts as they navigate the perils of this exciting new universe.”

Shobo and Shofela Coker won the Creators for Creators Grant in 2019 in recognition of their outstanding work on the comic “Outcasts of Jupiter,” a sci-fi story set in Morocco which is available to read here. Creators for Creators is a non-profit that works to support new voices in comics, supplying $30,000 grants to cartoonists or writer/artist duos to help create new works. The non-profit is supported by Image Comics and Iron Circus Comics, who have pledged to help publish the works of selected creators.

The book received advance praise from artist Nick Dragotta, who said, “Shobo and Shof give us an original, beautifully crafted sci-fi with ‘New Masters.’ It’s an incredible debut from a distinctly African perspective. Shof’s rhythmic storytelling, palettes, and world building visuals perfectly seam with Shobo’s intriguing cast of heroes, cut throats, and politicians like only brothers can. Immerse yourself in this new world, you won’t regret it!”

“New Masters” #1 (of 6) releases this February with a cover by Shof Coker.
