Today Fox has announced plans to make a film based on The New Mutants. Josh Boone, who directed 2014’s The Fault in Our Stars for Fox, has been tapped to director and co-write the film with Simon Kinberg, Knate Waltney and Lauren Shuler Dooner. Boone is also attached to the big screen take on Stephen King’s The Stand.
Kinberg had the following to say about the project, “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
The film is a spinoff of the existing universe, most recently seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film will likely debut after both the Bryan Singer directed X-Men: Apocalypse, the direct sequel to DoFP, and the currently in production Deadpool (who, coincidentally, made his first appearance in “New Mutants” #98). Gambit, starring Channing Tatum, and the untitled third Wolverine film, set to be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Logan, are also in early stages of pre-production.
The New Mutants made their first appearance in the comic world in 1982 in “Marvel Graphic Novel” #4, written by premiere X-Men scribe Chris Claremont.
