The network responsible for Riverdale, a show based on the world of Archie Comics, is digging deeper into the pool of Archie properties and developing a new one-hour drama The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The CW and Warner Brothers Studios along with Greg Berlanti Productions — the same body who has been developing the Arrowverse shows — will partner with showrunner and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa alonsgside director Lee Toland Krieger for this new project. Aguirre-Sacasa, Krieger, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, and Jon Goldwater will serve as executive producers.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch was created at Archie Comics by George Gladir and artist Dan DeCarlo in 1962 and followed the story of Sabrina a “half-witch” living with her two full witch aunts and the family cat Salem Saberhagen in the town of Greendale. Sabrina has previously had several television appearances including a live-action sitcom which began in 1996 with Melissa Joan Hart as the title character. This show, however, will be a darker look at the character more in line with the comic of the same name, “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” created by Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack, which had a darker horror vibe. The show is being described as more akin to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist and “will see Sabrina struggle to reconcile her dual nature of being half-witch and half-mortal while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.”

The show is being eyed to debut in the 2018-2019 season and is said to be a “companion series” to Riverdale, which could perhaps see the two in the same continuity and characters for both interact although it is unclear at this time. Casting and additional information will be available in the months to come.
