New Vertigo Book “Collider” Changes Title

Well that was slightly unlucky! And a bit poorly timed. Best laid plans, and all that.

Announced over at MTV Geek, it appears Vertigo’s new sci-fi ongoing “Collider” can no longer keep its title, as another property has laid claim to the title of “Collider” to the extent that not even an imprint backed by Warner Bros can keep the name. As Simon Oliver explains,

Unfortunately at the eleventh hour someone else seemed to believe they had the name “Collider” staked out and had planted a flag in it before we did. To be honest I haven’t gotten that involved, I don’t know who they are, what their book is about, but I wish them well with it.

Am I 100 % happy about being told to change the name of our book when it’s already been printed and on the trucks? I’d be lying if I said yes. But it’s life, these things happen, you’ve got to learn to take them on the chin and move on.

A quick Google search of “Collider comic” will of course only bring up the Vertigo title, but this other property could be anything — including but certainly not limited to Jason Butler’s upcoming sci-fi film the teaser of which states “to save mankind the need to change the future.” I would imagine that the two things existing both as sci-fi properties would cause a few feathers to get ruffled.

So, the new title for “Collider” the comic, then? “Federal Bureau of Physics”, a title which makes 100% sense for the series. It perhaps even makes a little bit more sense than “Collider,” and honestly, the name change sounds like it’ll probably help the book sell — it’s a lot easier to handsell and explain a book called “FBP” than “Collider,” for all intents and purposes.

It’ll be the same book, and the cover for issue #2 made it rather easy to poke fun at the new name:

For reference, the former version of the cover just left a lot more negative space at the top for the placement of the word “Collider.” A simple push upward, as seen above, makes it very easy to turn that into a gag.

So it’ll all work out.

Unless you don’t have an internet connection and go to your store to pick up “Collider” #2 and get this, in which case you might be a bit confused.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
