Nick Spencer Leaves Supergirl

Well this is certainly sad news.

We here at Multiversity have never shied away from our love of Supergirl thanks to Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle, but when Nick Spencer was announced as the new writer we said, “Ok, you know what? Cool. He was doing awesome with the Jimmy Olsen back-up, THUNDER Agents is great, and Morning Glories is the smash hit of the year. We can dig it!” Well, it looks like the inherent success of THUNDER Agents critically has had it’s effect because Nick Spencer is stepping off from his duties with Supergirl to focus entirely on THUNDER Agents. In his place, James Peaty (who has written Supergirl before with #33 right before Gates came in) will co-script issue #60 and then take over from there.

It’s both a good and bad thing. Spencer focusing on THUNDER Agents is the good part of this situation, because the book has astounded all of us and is truly one of the more unique books DC is putting out. Unfortunately, I speak for all of MC when I say we were universally looking forward to his take on the book. Bernard Chang will remain the artist of the title, but we’re unfamiliar with Peaty. Peaty is also named by Supergirl Editor Matt Idelson as someone who has written for several DC books now, including “Green Arrow, the Justice League, the JSA, and Batman.” For all intents and purposes, this could be Peaty’s big break.

So we’re sad to see Spencer off the title, but it’s not like there won’t be enough of him next year with THUNDER Agents, Iron Man 2.0, Morning Glories, and the Infinite Vacation as well as “all kinds of cool stuff coming up in 2011, so stay tuned and all that,” as Spencer remarks on Twitter. Here’s hoping Peaty can still keep Supergirl as high as it’s been since Gates took over.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
