This “Thor Annual” #1 is shaping up to be something special, as yesterday it was announced that CM Punk and Rob Guillory would be teaming up for a 10-page story in the book, and now Noelle Stevenson (“Lumberjanes”, “Nimona”) and Marguerite Sauvage (“Sensation Comics”) will be pairing for their own story about the newfangled Goddess of Thunder.

As Stevenson told Marvel.com, “Wil (Moss, the book’s editor) asked me to do a story about the recent female iteration of Thor,” she says. “It’s a fun challenge both as a fan of the classic character, but also to be working with a new character who readers haven’t seen as much of yet. I have the old mythology to work with, but I can also help contribute a little bit of new mythology as well!”

I love the idea of Marvel using this annual as a way to highlight new voices to Marvel, and I hope they keep doing it. One of my favorite series in recent years was the indie-centric “Strange Tales” books they released, and things like this are a great way to bridge the sensibilities of that with current continuity. Seeing the team of Sauvage (who is utterly brilliant) and Stevenson on a book like this gives serious hope for Marvel’s future.

This book arrives in February. I will be buying it, and I hope you will be as well.
