Last night on his blog, Brian Wood confirmed a Bleeding Cool rumor that Northlanders was not going to continue as long as he had planned. Citing poor sales as a reason, Wood announced that the upcoming Icelandic Trilogy will be the last arc, running the book up to issue #50 and featuring Paul Azaceta on art. While the book itself is being cut short, the story will not be, meaning that Northlanders will be running for the next nine or ten months until reaching it’s conclusion.
I suppose if you have to go out, going out on a story called The Icelandic Trilogy is pretty badass way to go. And while the news sucks, Wood remains optimistic, saying that it’s a triumph that a book as bleak as this made it as far it does. Northlanders was a very smart comic, reviling in dark political and historical thrillers steeped in metaphor and cerebral story telling. In other words, the kind of story that Wood has proven to be perfect at with DMZ. However, knowing that both books will be gone soon is rather depressing, as a fan.
Wood notes that he has announcements coming up, with some books to definitely be announced by NYCC. Multiversity will be at NYCC again this year, so expect to-the-minute updates. We wish Brian luck with all future endeavors, including the Massive, the fantastic artist from Supermarket (published on IDW, so that might be an indication of things to come?).
