NYCC 2013: “Captain Marvel” Returns And Even More Announcements From The Superior Spider-Man Panel

There’s a lot to get through here, as with all of Marvel’s panels this weekend, so the usual caveats apply. CBR’s coverage of Marvel’s ‘Superior Spider-Man & Friends’ panel is always appreciated and you should check there for more extensive coverage than here. But now to the big news of the panel.

CAPTAIN MARVEL’S BACK, BABY! In a move that I honestly didn’t see coming, probably because the answer was a little too obvious for me, Marvel will be relaunching “Captain Marvel” as a new #1 in March of next year. Kelly Sue DeConnick will obviously be staying on as writer and will be joined David Lopez to take Carol higher than ever before: into outer space. With a more cosmic angle than before, we’ll be seeing much more different stories than we have in this volume.

One of the All New series announced at the panel was the Zeb Wells and Mike Del Mundo will be bringing Elektra back to the spotlight again in a new solo series. While not much was revealed with regards to the story or tone of the book, it can probably be assured that with Del Mundo on covers and interior arts, it’s going to look gorgeous. Also the promise of a more modest costume is something I’m looking forward to because I could never take the thought of a ninja in a thong bikini seriously.

Another exciting new series, for me at least, is that Nathan Edmonson and Mitch Gerads will be bringing the Punisher to L.A. This is a pretty big move as a Punisher fan as the character has rarely left New York as a home base (you have to imagine he’s killed pretty much every crime lord in the tri-state area by now, right?) so moving to a city so vastly different like Los Angeles offers a much different take to the series. Also, other Punisher fans might remember that Rachel Cole-Alves ended up in Hollywood at the end of “Punisher: War Zone”. Hmm?

The last new All New series to be announced is “New Warriors” by Chris Yost and Marcus To. We’ve already seen the beginnings of this team up in recent “Nova” issues with Sam Alexander running into Speedball and Justice, but this new “New Warriors” will expand the team to include those who have been deemed a threat by the High Evolutionay. This includes Sam, Speedball and Justice as well as Scarlet Spider and Sun Girl. Looks like “Young Avengers” might have some competition next year.

And last but not least… something’s happening with “Superior Spider-Man”, I don’t know I wasn’t really paying attention. No, I’m kidding, it turns out that the series isn’t ending as some thought based on the teaser. In fact, Slott is going strong as ever, this time bringing in a new goblin. As if we didn’t have enough, right? The new goblin will be introduced in a two-part story in #23 and #24 with a new story arc starting in #27.NOW titled ‘Goblin Nation’. I wonder what that could be about…

And that’s about it for Marvel’s announcements from this year’s NYCC. As always, be sure to check out CBR’s coverage of the panel itself for more information.
