We’ve known about this since the morning, but it’s just been announced at NYCC: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ new creator-owned collaboration “Fatale” will be released by Image Comics, not Marvel’s Icon Comics. The reasoning is pretty simple and doesn’t affect his work at Marvel at all – he just promised Image publisher Eric Stephenson that he’d take his talents to Image one day, and this is him fulfilling that promise.
Joining them on this collaboration is legendary colorist Dave Stewart, whose work will likely only help accentuate the greatness of Phillips’ art.
And what they will be bringing to life is something that Brubaker promises to be “pretty much the weirdest thing I’ve ever written,” as it is “a weird combo of James M. Cain and Lovecraft. It’s got a real horror element to it — the first time I’ve really tried to do anything with horror — but it’s also got this really epic story to it.”
Femme fatales, Lovecraftian monsters, Brubaker, Phillips, Stewart and Image Comics? Sounds like a match made in heaven.
Look for more on this as the release date approaches, but as it stands now, the book is just listed as “2012.” Hopefully it beats the apocalypse.
UPDATE! Check out the solicit after the jump.
