Oh BTDUBS, Season 3 of Avatar: The Legend of Korra to Premiere in Exactly One Week

Didn’t see that coming.

Nickelodeon quietly announced today that the third season of the spiritual successor to Avatar: The Last AirbenderThe Legend of Korra will premiere on June 27th which is, as the headline points out, seven days from now.

Serving as a sequel to the classic The Last Airbender Legend of Korra tells the story of a new Avatar who must unite a world with divides that aren’t as easy to spot as they were for her predecessor Aang. For example, instead of a massive army of Firebenders, Korra’s faced non-bender protestors who are fed up with being considered second class citizens to those who can bend the elements and the political machinations of an uncle with cosmically evil goals in mind.

Legend of Korra hasn’t been as universally acclaimed as Last Airbender was, but it still retains a fierce following; many of whom are upset that Nickelodeon seems to be undermining one of their most popular shows by giving it relatively little publicity and not announcing the premiere date until a week beforehand. However, there already been some problems with the third season of the show, which will be animated by Studio Mir (AKA the studio that produces the good episodes of Korra). A couple weeks ago, MundoNick, a Nickelodeon affiliate from Mexico, accidentally released three episodes which then proceeded to leak online, upsetting a large number of fans.

It’s hard not to see Nickelodeon’s choice as a somewhat ill-advised attempt at damage control, especially considering that all three leaked episodes are set to “officially premiere” next Friday. Still, a lot of fans are concerned that this might be an act of sabotage to the show, with Nickelodeon under advertising the show to hurt its ratings. Honestly? At this moment, the short notice seems to have built more hype than if Nick had announced the air date a couple months in advance as is per usual.

Hopefully, this snafu won’t hurt ratings. Though some consider Legend of Korra inferior to The Last Airbender, it’s really good when it stands on its own., expanding upon the world building of the previous series while presenting new threats that Aang could never have possibly faced. In fact, this season might seem to be the most groundbreaking yet if the trailer is any indication.

We’re apparently getting:

  • What happened to Toph between the two series
  • More metalbenders (The specialized group of earthbenders, not the robot form Futurama)
  • Dragons (?)
  • Old Zuko

And most startlingly of all,

  • New Airbenders.

Avatar: The Legend of Korra premieres June 27th on Nickelodeon.
