Oni Press have announced plans for “Aggretsuko,” a comic book series based on the hit Netflix series of the same name. “The Black Mage” creative team of writer Daniel Barnes and artist D.J. Kirkland will be at the helm of the comic series.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Aggretsuko tells the story of a red panda called Retsuko who works in the accounting department of a Japanese trading firm. With her dayjob constantly causing her frustration, each night she releases her dissatisfaction by singing heavy metal at a karaoke bar. However, after five years of work, Retsuko’s unhappiness leads to a series of events that change her life forever.

In a statement to THR, Barnes said the secret to the success of the series is how relatable Retsuko’s predicament is, detailing that “We’ve all had to deal with the existential nightmares of the workforce, and we’ve all had really, really bad bosses.” Kirkland echoed this by adding that he has “worked my fair share of desk jobs in my adult life,” and is looking forward to the fun that can be had by using his “personal experiences” as inspiration for the events of “Aggretsuko‘s world.”

“Aggretsuko” is the second comic book series to be announced as part of Oni Press’s partnership with Sanrio. The first was “Gudetama: Love for the Lazy.”

“Aggretsuko” #1 is scheduled for release on February 5.
