Oni Press publishes a little bit of everything. That includes all ages books like the recent “Space Battle Lunchtime” to licensed properties like “Invader Zim” and more mature titles like “Letter 44”. Today Oni has announced Limerence Press, a brand new imprint that will publish sex positive erotica and sex education books. The first of this will be the third volume of “Oh Joy Sex Toy” by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan.
“Oh Joy Sex Toy” is a log running webcomic that reviews and informs about sex and sex products. To be completely honest, it’s one of the funniest and most useful things you’ll read on the internet most days. Kickstarter backers will be able to get extra perks and and an exclusive cover and Oni will publish the book in stores all over the country.
Ari Yarwood, an editorial staple at Oni Press will be managing the line. She explained that, “The idea of ‘limerence,’ that giddiness of falling head over heels for someone, is something we hope to capture with this imprint. Erotica comics can be fun and inviting, as well as sexy, and my goal is that readers will find that titles from Limerence Press have real emotion and affection in them. This line is committed to publishing books that are feminist, inclusive, and queer-friendly—comics that readers feel good about recommending to their friends!”
Erotica comics have a long history stretching back to the days of the first Superman comics when “Tijuana Bibles” were being sold like crazy. What will be interesting is how Limerence approaches creating erotica. Erotica captures a lot of what we find sexy and stimulating and to be successful, Limerence will need to appeal to a wide spectrum of that. Male power fantasy can’t be the be all and end off of Limerence. There’s potential here and I can’t wait to see what they do.
“Oh Joy Sex Toy” Volume 3, the first book published will be listed in next month’s previews and the Kickstarter is scheduled to launch today.
